ACTION COMICS #1 REPRINTS...

Images copyright DC COMICS

There've been several reprints of ACTION COMICS #1
over the years, and I have 5 of them.  You see them on eBay
being offered at various prices, but some of them are, frankly,
ridiculous.  The issue below is listed as high as £865.90 (will it
ever sell at that price?), and the ish below that is listed as high
as £263.42.  I bought around a dozen of the '88 reprint when
it came out and have given away several over the years for
nothing, so basically, I've being giving away money.

It'd be great to have an original 1938 issue, eh?

Oh, go on then - here's the original.

I got the Famous First Edition issue when it came out back in the early 70's. It was really exciting to me to get my hands on that......to see what a comic book looked like some 35 years earlier....hard to believe it was only about 35 years old at the time. I think I got nearly all of the Famous First Editions that DC did, though they got less and less fancy as time passed....the last few didn't have replicas of the front and back cover from what I remember.

At the risk of sounding dim, on what possible grounds could someone selling a *reprint* think it's worth eight hundred and sixty three pounds...?

If I remember correctly, I never saw any of the Famous First Editions until 1979 or '80, G, when I got my hands on the 1st edition of Superman. I've now got a few, but did you know there were hardback editions of some of them? I'd love to have them.

It's beyond me, BS. I think the fact the price isn't rounded off is due to conversion from dollars, but I know that's not what you mean. There are examples of much cheaper copies of the same comics, but still too dear in my opinion. What amazes me 'though, is that the 1988 reprint is almost 30 years old - to me, it seems it only came out about 4 or 5 years back at the most.

The other thing is that the tabloid versions of those Famous First Editions are basically worthless without their original Gold or Silver outer covers. Yet just about all the copies on eBay have had their outer covers removed ... perhaps to make them look more like the real thing? Who knows? Who cares?

I remember a Glasgow newspaper street vendor having a pile of the Superman ones back in the late '70s, early '80s, all without the covers. I wonder if that's because they'd first been owned by a newsagent's shop, and the cardboard covers had been returned for credit, leaving the actual contents to be disposed of as the newsagent saw fit? I got a replacement Thor Treasury Edition from such a vendor, but it had its cover.
